John 19
Jesus told Pilate before he passed sentence that the leaders of the Jews were more culpable than Pilate in the injustice that was unfolding.
When Pilate out the sign above Jesus calling Him the king of the Jews he was making sure that there was no doubt about why he choose the sentence he pronounced and he would not change it to read “he said he was king if the Jews” because he wanted it to be clear that he wasn’t crucifying a man for being mentally unstable. Pilate was also needling the Jews for bringing him an innocent man and threatening to accuse him to Cesar if he didn’t comply (they were threatening him, not simply making an observation when they began mentioning Cesar). By labeling Jesus “king of the Jews” he was reversing the that by implying that at least some of the jess accepted Him as their king.
Of the for women standing at the foot of His cross three were named Mary.
The two malefactor who were crucified by Jesus had their legs broken so that they would die in time to be taken from tier crosses for the high holy day.
