Here we have specific references to two individuals. One is Gaius, to whom this is written, who is an example of faithfulness. The other is Diotrephes, who seems to have some authority or social influence within the church in his area but who uses that to blatantly obstruct the work by refusing to receive the brethren and actively casting out of the church those who would receive them.
