For three days, we’ll work from AoM’s “Craft the Life You Want” series. While many things in life are out of our control, there are more things than we often realize that are in our control. Most often, we simply don’t realize that we have the power to change things in our life when we aren’t happy. Today, work on crafting a life plan. It can be a long process, so if you’re short on time, start by defining your various roles as a man, and your ultimate purpose and goals within those roles, including specific action steps.
I had started doing this 11 months ago. I’ll start from what I worked on then. The roles I defined were: Disciple, Husband, Father, Friend, Employee, Writer, and Leader.
As a disciple I want others who knew me in an ecclesiastical capacity to say that they saw in me a person who was fully committed to his faith and secure in his relationship with Heavenly Father. As a husband I want Laura to say that I always gave the best of myself to her and that I helped in the areas that she struggled with and encouraged her in her areas of strength. I want her to say that I was a devoted father who helped our children grow in the ways that they each specifically needed. As a father I want each of my children to say that I was always available and willing to help when they needed me and that I always sought to help them grow into better men and women of God.
As a friend I want my family and friends to say that no matter our circumstances they could depend on my friendship and acceptance and that I never turned my back on them. As an employee I want my supervisor and coworkers to say that I was dependable in making sure that the work was done well and that the expectations of customers were consistently exceeded.
As a writer I want readers to say that my writing caused them to think more deeply about something and occasionally helped to change their opinions on a subject. And as a leader I want any who find themselves under my leadership to say that I took my responsibilities seriously but that I never saw myself as more important than another person because of whatever position I might have held.
As far as specific steps go. I’ll work on that later.
