Even when the Lamanites had possession of fortified cities the Nephites had two advantages. First, they were in their own land which meant that they were safe to operate in the open while the Lamanites were essentially confines to the walled cities they had taken. Second, the Nephites had designed the fortifications so they knew the principles of fortifying and the particular strengths and weaknesses of the cities they were trying to reclaim. Those two advantages meant that the playing field was more level for the Nephites to retake their cities than it had been for the Lamanites to capture them initially.
