What was it like among the people of the church during the days of Mormon? How clear was it that they were a people heading for utter destruction? Did the people of the church consistently walk so differently from the other people of their nation that they stood out in Nephite crowd out did they blend in and try to live their religion privately?
The Lord will work among any society so long as there remains at least one person who may be saved. Of course sometimes that work is to call out those who will heed the words of salvation, as shown by the story of Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah.
Mormon knew that if the people of the church were proud of their righteousness and looked down on the wickedness of those outside the church they would fall. That was why he told them of the importance of charity.
