When twelve men went into the land of Canaan to spy it out ten of them feared and said the people were too strong for Israel. Joshua and Caleb disagreed because they trusted the Lord. Thus they were the only two alive when the people entered the promised land forty years later.
While Joshua became the leader of Israel after Moses and thus we have more information on his life, Caleb was clearly the same kind of man.
Joshua had the impossible task of following Moses in leading Israel. The task would be impossible for any man except a man such as Joshua who knew the key to Moses’ leadership – Joshua carefully obeyed everything the Lord told him and thus he was able to lead the people as they secured the land of their inheritance.
Joshua told the people that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” With equal accuracy he could have said, “as for me and my house, we have served the Lord.”
