We had a nice end of summer fling for the family today. We borrowed the kayaks from Andy and Marsha and went to Jordanelle with the Jacobsons. In the future we will confine ourselves to Rockport since we can park right on the beach and save ourselves the trouble of hauling all the equipment from the parking area to the shore but aside from that we had a great day together. With 8 kayaks we didn’t lack for opportunities for everyone to get out on the water.
We also managed to have some adventure toward the end of the day. We learned from having to haul beached kayaks back to our spot on the beach that we could tie the bow of one kayak to the seat of another in order to tow the extra kayak. That led to Laura and I taking opportunities to tow the little boys. Late in the afternoon while I was towing Enoch and Noah, with Ezra sitting in the back of my kayak, a wave came from the side and tipped the trailing kayak over dumping Enoch and Noah in the lake. I had a moment of panic when I saw what happened but I was very proud of the way that Enoch was able to move far enough to catch on to his overturned kayak and Noah, being unable to get to the kayak, kept paddling and kicking despite his obvious fear during the minute it took me to maneuver my kayak around and reach my paddle out for him to grab onto it.
I got Noah and then Enoch onto my kayak (which was more weight than I would want on it) and then flipped their kayak upright so that I could set them back on it. All the while Isaac, in his own kayak zipped off when there was nothing he could do at the scene to help and got Laura to come assist us. She arrived as I was ready to place the boys back on their kayak. Instead Noah rode with Laura and Enoch had the kayak to himself.
We left relatively soon after that and within minutes of leaving Jordanelle rain started pouring down. We ended up going to the Jacobsons for dinner and it was obvious how tired everybody was because all talking and playing was low key until we left.
