  • Ammonihah today

When I read the words Amulek to the people of Ammonihah I can easily imagine him saying the same things today to us. I can also easily imagine many among us today who would respond like Zeezrom and the lawyers twisting his words and seeking to keep the people believing lies.

  • Not widely known

It always strikes me that when Alma prophesied that the Lamanites would be brought to the truth he was almost certainly aware that the sons of Mosiah were already seeing success among the Lamanites.

  • Eli’s weakness

I don’t know if we consistently recognize the magnitude of Eli’s personal failing. We may think that his counsel to his sons against making the people transgress was all he could do with grown sons but it’s clear that he could have and should have done more. What example would he have been seeing if…

  • Where do you face?

When we sorrow we would do well to turn towards the Lord like Hannah rather than turning away—sabonetes Him on the pretext that we feel abandoned.

  • All things in order

Notice how careful Naomi, truth, and Boaz were in all things. Naomi have careful instructions to Ruth on what to do and Ruth carefully followed the directions. Boaz was careful that nothing should appear improper and he made sure to publicly allow the nearest kinsman his right of first refusal. With all things in order…

  • Enduring conversion

Both daughters in law planned to stay with Naomi. The difference was that Orpah accepted the various reasons that Naomi outlined why staying with her was unwise while Ruth has truly adopted the faith of her husband.

  • Ammonihah at home

I can really relate to Alma as he first went to Ammonihah—the people didn’t want to listen to his preaching and they rejected his words. I feel the same way with many of the people in my house: they want to maintain something like the status quo while i am declaring that this cannot be.

  • Righteousness in Gideon

It must have been s relief for Alma to find the people in Gideon walking in the parts of righteousness after all the wickedness Alma had been seeing in Zerahemla.

  • Follow-up invitation

After prompting the people to reflect on their reasoned for judgement Alma follows up by telling them that the Lord is openly inviting them to follow Him and bring forth the fruits of righteousness. Any who felt they were not prepared were met with gentleness rather than condemnation.

  • Are you prepared?

The message of Alma is an invitation for self reflection.
