  • A blessing for Sam

I have always wondered about a blessing for Sam. Lehi blessed Nephi, Zoram, Lankan and Lemuel, the sons of Ishmael, the children of Laman and Lemuel, Jacob, and Joseph. Today i noticed that Dan was included with llamas, Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael in receiving the first blessing of Lehi which was conditional on…

  • A pretext for priesthood restriction

Abraham records that Pharaoh who established the land of Egypt was a righteous man who tried to mimic the patriarchal order from the days of Adam but was barred from holding the priesthood because he was of the cursed lineage through the wife of Ham. I could see how that could be used to argue…

  • The greatness of Abraham

I had always pictures Abraham living alone, apart from all other nations, with some servants to keep the household and the livestock cared for. This time as I read I realize that Abraham had gathered quite the following from virtually the beginning of when we read about him. I also realized for the first time…

  • The nature of covenants

I like the description of covenants I’m the broader sense beyond simply religious settings. I especially like the description of a covenant as a relationship of truth. A covenant is a relationship of trust. When God invited Abraham to make a covenant He was inviting Abraham into a partnership where each would trust in what…

  • Overwhelmed

It sounds like there was so much information in the words of Isaiah that the brothers on Nephi we’re overwhelmed and unable to understand all that was being said. I know that as i have become more familiar with the scriptures that things which has been confusing out unnoticed before later become clear to me.

  • Contrast

After clearly saying that Israel was known to be transgressors and repeatedly would turn their backs on the Lord Isaiah makes clear that the Lord still intends to honor His covenant with them by pouring out incredible blessings upon the House of Israel even if it would be necessary to chasten them and leave them…

  • “I knew that thou art obstinate”

Was Nephi trying to let his brothers see that Israel turning away from God was a consistent problem by choosing this section of Isaiah to share with them? That would make sense since they were living that pattern and since they were arguing that the people of Jerusalem were righteous.

  • Timely reminder

It seems that as soon as they reached the promised land on an aisle of the sea Nephi began to review the prophecies of Isaiah concerning the house of Israel scattered upon the aisles of the sea. I’m sure he hoped that the people would feel a connection to those prophecies and would take comfort…

  • Adult sons

I never considered before how old the sons of Noah were by the time of the flood. I hadn’t expected then to be teenagers or anything but didn’t think of them being over 100 before the flood arrived. (I don’t know that they were all that old.)

  • Scattered

If all of mankind came from a single garden with a single set of parents then they stayed within one central region until the Tower of Babel. If, on the other hand, this record is simply the family through whom Christ came then they had little if any interaction with outside societies prior to Babel.…
