“I had loved them”
It takes a special strength to do as Mormon did, loving his people even while being clear-eyed about their wickedness.

The beginning of the stewardship
The Lord days repeatedly that the stewardships being assigned are the beginning of stewardships for each person and that if they are faithful they will receive a multiplicity of blessings. It sounds to me like having a basic inheritance upon which people can build as much as they are able from that base. This is…

Clear instructions
I never realized how the Lord gave detailed instructions on how to form and run a high council to address dishes between members of the church, including when and where they could be convened or appealed. I’m sure those same instructions are used to run a stake disciplinary council today.

Wicked in a righteous society
I got a sense of how people privately practicing wickedness in a society that is at least outwardly righteous would feel constrained and unfairly limited. That would naturally lead them to chafe and seek to change the social norms around them.

In that day
It seems clear that the prophecy of Christ about the timing of His marvelous work in the latter days had been fulfilled. The question that remains is if there is more to fulfill for those who have not noticed what has already passed.

Act…pertaining to futurity
I find it interesting that the Lord counsels that his people should “act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity.” It is a reminder that we should always be playing the long game. We should not take short term gains (especially with respect to law and government) that jeopardize future stability and wisdom. I intend…

Bare with patience
Somehow I never paid close attention to this detailed description of what baring afflictions with patience looks like. We are to forgive freely three trespasses with increasing blessings promised if we do so. After that we are allowed to use our judgement in how we respond to continued offenses. On the other hand, if we…
