  • Be ye therefore perfect

I never before connected the command (or invitation) to be perfect with the new law that Christ introduced. Tonight it made perfect sense to me as “love your friends” becomes “love your enemies” and “don’t commit adultery” becomes “don’t look upon a woman to lust after her.”

  • Celestial society

“Blessed are ye when men revile you for my sake” losses some of its meaning in a society where people don’t revile each other. That’s a problem many people would be happy to have.

  • Establish the gate

Once Christ had introduced himself to the people He immediately established the gate to the covenant path by publicly calling those who would have authority to baptize, declaring the method of baptism, and emphasizing that faith, repentance and baptism were the way to return to Him. His message could not have been more clear.

  • Hearing a voice

It seems to me that after the voice they had multiple times during the darkness that the people would not be very confused upon hearing a voice from heaven. This suggests to me that when Christ spoke in the darkness it was less subtle than when Heavenly Father spoke here at the land of Bountiful.

  • A testament for today

It is clear that this record is a testament for the reader because of things such as this invitation to search the scriptures and see if the things recorded here are a fulfillment of prophecy.

  • Grieving for past sins

After silence while people must have contemplated the offer of healing and the hopeful message that they had been spared by being more righteous than others I have always wondered why this later statement by the Savior returned the people to wailing and grieving. I think it must be because they considered the many times…

  • Overflowing encouragement

Look at all the ways that Christ encourages those hearing him: He tells them they were spared because they were more righteous than those who were destroyed. He invites them to repent and promises to heal them. He promises eternal life to those who will come. He promises to receive any who come into Him.…

  • Divine explanation

How did people feel hearing about the gate of different cities so that they knew what happened in various cities (not just their own) and why? The righteous must have felt justified to a degree and those who were less righteous must have felt the need to repent – and hopefully felt fortunate for the…

  • Destruction

Despre knowing that the righteous were the most likely to be sorted, nobody could have gone through the terrible destruction in the Americas that accompanied the death of Christ and not feel that they were being punished.

  • Start of the year

I just realized that the sign if the birth of Christ would have been at our very best the beginning of the Nephite calendar year (which would have tracked with the Hebrew calendar). That being the case it makes even more sense that they would choose to number their years based on a great event…
