  • Ye have put off the Spirit of God

When I read the words of Korihor I hear Isaac who, like Korihor (who he is ignorant of), has “put off the Spirit of God that it may have no place in {him}.” When looking at the effect that the teaching of Korihor had on those who listened to him, namely that they were “lifting…

  • A righteous natural desire

Alma’s desire to speak with the trump of an angel was not an unrighteous desire. In fact, it was a perfectly natural desire for a righteous person—the Christlike desire to reach all the children of God with the message of salvation. But, life any righteous man it was important that Alma remember that the Lord…

  • Immediately indebted

How often do we overlook the greatest generosity of the Nephites with regard to the people of Ammon—they fought and died to protect the people of Ammon before there was any opportunity to receive the promised portion of their crops that was intended to sustain the Nephite army for their protection.

  • New beginnings

There really a unique energy in the beginning of a new movement that is rarely replicated at later phases. The work of the apostles after the death of Christ has all those hallmarks.

  • Seeing the hearts

I wondered why the Amalekites were so intent upon shedding blood. They fought the people of Ammon but found it unsatisfying then fought the neighbors and found it unsuccessful before returning to satiate themselves by killing those who would not defend themselves. (I would have found that humiliating.) The Lord told Ammon that Satan had…

  • Where is the focus?

Aaron was concerned that Ammon was focused on his own works. Ammon’s boasting however was not in what he had done but in what God had done which he was blessed to see. It is easy for people to be focused inward but important for them to stay focused on God.

  • Keeping the law “as yet”

It seems likely that these Lamanite converts had a more accurate view of the role of the law of Moses than many of the neighbors likely had.

  • More hardened

When people reject the truth they become more hardened against it than if they were never converted. It’s like tempered steel or tempered glass. This does not mean that they can’t repent, it simply means the barrier to conversion is higher after a prior conversion (or at least participation) has once been rejected.

  • Paving the way

The way of righteous leadership is not to compel people to convert (the Spanish inquisition) but simply to remove barriers that would impede the spreading of the word.

  • A new appreciation

I never appreciated the boldness of Peter after Christ ascended to heaven the way I do now. He had learned the Jessica Christ taught and heeded the charge to “feed My sheep.” Likewise I had failed to recognize the similarities between the early converts to Christ and the Nephites after the sermon by King Benjamin…
