For a book that claims to be of divine with and origin, the Book of Mormon is remarkably straightforward. From the very beginning and throughout its introductory matter it gives plain explanation for the reader to understand the context and purpose of the work. The is no condescension or obfuscation, just plain and direct recitation.

With the direct way that Nephi is addressing the House of Israel in this chapter I am eager to see how he reads the message here as a member of the House of Israel in modern times.

Recorded from memory
Nephi was first commanded to make plates and keep a record after he arrived in this land. That means that all his records of their travels were made from memory (which might explain why his brothers often seemed to go from obedient to disobedient and back very suddenly sometimes.

Curious workmanahip
I wonder how valuable the knowledge was that Nephi gained in building the ship about different methods of woodwork etc. Those skills and that experience may have proved very valuable when they later built a temple.

So great a work
When Laman and Lemuel say that Nephi was lacking in judgement and unable to accomplish “so great a work” as to build a ship Nephi is thinking to himself and essentially saying to them “this is nothing for God, He can use me to accomplish much greater things than building a ship of He chooses.”

Time to rest
Nephi had been in the land Bountiful for many days before the voice of the Lord came to him. In other words, he was allowed time to rest from his journeyings before he was called upon to do the next thing. That isn’t always the case but sometimes, thankfully, it is the case.
