A constant struggle
Nephi saw the history of his posterity from a very high level and the consistent theme was struggling against their brethren and struggling against pride and sin.

A fractured covenant
I find it interesting for the Spirit of the Lord to note that the house of Israel fought against the Apostles of the Lamb. Those who had inherited (and forgotten the meaning of) the first covenant setting themselves at odds with those who first received the new covenant. The Lord however is constant and will,…

Further witnesses
Nephi wanted to know for himself the things that Lehi testified of. His late chapters in 2 Nephi are price that he received that witness for himself just as Jacob 5 is evidence that Jacob had come to know for himself the things that his father, Lehi, had taught.

Looking for direction
I notice that in Lehi’s dream Sariah, Sam and Nephi we’re looking for direction while Laman and Lemuel weren’t. When we consider that it should be no surprise that Sariah, Sam and Nephi we’re more amenable to taking direction than Laman and Lemuel were.

Conditional obedience
Laman and Lemuel are clasic examples of people who practice conditional obedience. They will be obedient when they agree and not if they disagree. A difference of perspective
Nephi focused on an eternal perspective where doing as he had promised was important and where he was working in concert with an omnipotent Heavenly Father. When faced with an obstacle his instinct was to press forward. Laman and Lemuel were focused on a temporal perspective where their promise was only as good as their…

Not so suddenly
Because Nephi tells us in chapter 1 that Lehi has a vision and paged in Jerusalem and them starts chapter 2 with Lehi being warned that the people sought his life it is easy to conclude that he only pushed briefly before he was driven from the land. While it is possible that it only…

The First Book of Nephi
I had long suspected this but reading the introduction to First Nephi written by Nephi it became clear to me how Nephi wrote his books in the small plates. He had been keeping his record in the large plates and then soon after arriving on the promised land he got the command to make a…
