  • Jacob’s role

Nephi called Jacob to be a priest even as Nephi was referred as a king. For at least part of Nephi’s reign Jacob followed the directions of Nephi in fulfilling his role. Jacob’s responsibilities were ecclesiastical but Nephi was still the final ecclesiastical least among his people.

  • We have had much trouble

Laman and Lemuel say that they have had much trouble because of Nephi but they have been there ones binding him and trying to kill him while he had been the finding food when they were starving. All they can remember was that his bow broke, not that he found the solution to their shared…

  • God hath been my support

Nephi might have thought he was being metaphorical when he asked that the Lord make a way for him to escape his enemies but at least one in his life he has to take those would follow and flee from mortal enemies.

  • Soft heart

I notice that Nephi must admonish his brothers and they reviled against him and seek to harm him. On the other hand, he sees himself as flawed. He doesn’t see himself as better than them, just that they need admonition from him the same way he needs admonition from the Lord.

How young was Joseph as Lehi gave this counsel? Would he have been likely to follow Laman and Lemuel without the counsel to follow Nephi? I don’t expect so.

  • Agency is vital

If men were not free to choose (and given information sufficient to make an informed choice) there would be no purpose to the plan of salvation.

  • Promises on the land

Lehi tells his children clearly how to secure the blessings of the Lord for themselves and their posterity. It makes me wonder if Laman and Lemuel spent any time believing in those promises.

  • Kings and Queens

The Jews are promised that kings among the gentiles shall be their nursing fathers while Lego is that there will be no onions in the promised land. That points toward kings in the e rest of the world being those nursing fathers.

  • Righteousness opens us to joy

Jacob says that he could speak of holiness and happy topics if the people were holy. So it is with us, if we will pursue righteousness and holiness we will have opportunities to taste and learn if hours that aren’t accessible to those who don’t seek after righteousness.
