  • No sugarcoating

Jacob tells the people right up front that many of their children will perish because of unbelief. The promise isn’t that none will be lost but instead that future generations will again come to a knowledge of the truth.

  • The gospel in a single sermon

While there is truth in all the scriptures, some portions are better suited to stand on their own than others. If I had to pick a single chapter to be the sun of the scriptures available to a person I don’t know for sure what I would pick but I guarantee that 2 Nephi 9…

  • My friends

Being called a friend of the Lord is the highest compliment. I think that “ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart I have written my law,” is a description of those who would be called friend.

  • Giving up on the Lord

Those who give up on the Lord forget that no matter how clever or powerful they think they are, He is more powerful and able to help His covenant people put destroy the wicked than they could ever hope to be.

  • Following his father

I’m confident that Nephi noted the fact that he was forced to take his family and flee for his life because of his prophecies just as his father had been. I wonder if Laman and Lemuel noticed the parallel and the fact that they were on the seeking to murder side this time. (Probably not.)

  • Choosing his focus

Nephi begins by feeling saddened by his weakness but then he chooses to focus his attention on the strength of the Lord instead.

  • Blessing the children of Laman and Lemuel

I wonder if Laman and Lemuel were present when Lehi blessed their children. If so I can imagine that their feelings were pricked and they were angry at the implications of the blessing he gave.

  • The prophecies of Joseph

If the prophecies if Joseph were had on the bread plates, I wonder if they have been preserved in Jewish writings into the modern day. I suspect that the Jewish writings are incomplete.
