    Even for the righteous, this great destruction must have been terrifying. How many remembered the prophecies at the time? It would be easy to forget in terror.

  • Nephi mirrors Christ

    I never noticed that Nephi had a 3-year ministry along the Nephites mirroring the time of Christ’s ministry. Nephi healed, cast out enough spirits and raised the dead – just as Jesus did in Palestine. Nephi truly paced the way for Jesus to minister to the people after His Resurrection.

  • Willing to sin

    None of those who were selling for power and condemning the witnesses of Christ to death could have been to young to understand the destruction that the Gadianton robbers had threatened then with less than a decade earlier. They made their choices knowing fully how those combinations nearly destroyed them before.

    Only by gathering all their possessions densely in one fortified position could the Nephites be strong enough to outlast the robbers. It took years of patience before they were able to gain the upper hand in this war.

  • Extinct Lamanites

    With the Lamanites joining the Nephites in order to stand against the Gadiantons there were functionally no Lamanites at this time – only Nephites and Gadiantons. When there later come to be Lamanites again they are starting a new society which had money of the former people but no direct genealogical connection.
