Meanwhile in the land of Nephi…
None years into the reign of the judges is halfway through the mission of the sons of Mosiah. We know that the converts among the Lamanites opened correspondence with the Nephites. I wonder if Alma was aware of at least a portion of the success that Ammon and his brethren were having by that point.

Too much for one
Up to this point Alma has always worked in his own to preach to the people. In Ammonihah he faced a challenge to big for a single person. After meeting Amulek I’m not sure if Alma ever went on a solo mission again.

Wholely confined
I wonder how completely confined to the judgement seat Alma had been. Had he been so busy with that job that he could not adequately minister to the church in Zerahemla? Was that how they had fallen into the level of pride and wickedness that convinced him to give up the judgement seat?

Restructuring
It would seem that a change in leadership is a natural byproduct of correcting a flaw in the status quo. Once Alma has addressed the price of the church in Zealand he ordained new leaders among them. (That’s not to say that the were no existing leaders who continued to lead.)

Modern Amlici
I can’t read the story of Amlici and not see the MAGA movement of today—following a lie and convincing themselves that they are in the majority even when they aren’t and trying to take the power they seek by force. The most frightening parallel is how many people become convinced to join them even when…

Enticing doctrine
The doctrines exposed by Nehor were desirable to those who did not wish to control themselves, that is, those who did not wish to follow doctrines designed to challenge and improve on human nature. For them his ready doctrines were preferable and comfortable and thus popular.

Quasi-Theocracy
I suspect that Alma was voted as chief judge BECAUSE he was the high priest. That suggests that the members of the church had the majority vote which makes me wonder if many of the initial judges were also priests in the church. If that was the case, hopefully there was some solid divergence between…

End of an era
I’ll always wonder why Helaman, Moroni, and Pahoran in so short a timeframe. On the other hand, I have now seen instances where we lose a rash of prominent people in quick succession. Sometimes it just happens but when it does it seems to make people introspective.
