  • Maintaining perspective

If Moroni didn’t maintain a clear vision of his goal – to secure his people – it would be easy to hurt his long term prospects by taking the easy road to short term gains such as killing the Lamanites at the city of Gid while they were drunken. Had he done that he would…

  • Personal truth

It is popular in our day for people to talk about “my truth” and living their truth – as if truth were open for interpretation. On the other hand, Ammoron exemplifies how this attitude works. He selected the version of history which fit how he had decided to define himself and spouted them as the…

  • Individualized covenants

The sons of Helaman were men for their time. They came forth vowing to defend their lives and the liberty of the Nephites in all cases at a time when the Nephites were threatened with destruction by the evil designs of a Nephite dissenter who had usurped the Lamanite throne. This covenant that these boys…

  • Plans in motion

I have often wondered how Ammoron was so speedy in opening a new front in the way. I am beginning to suspect that it was a strategy that he had already discussed with Amalickiah before Teancum killed Amalickiah.

  • Always learning

I never before thought about the fact that Moroni designed some of his later fortifications based on the ways that the Lamanites attempted to breach the walls of the city of Noah when they first encountered the new  fortifications that he had begun erecting around the Nephite cities.

  • Preparation

Moroni didn’t content himself with preparing for where the Lamanites were likely to attack first. He went beyond that to prepare for how they would likely respond to the initial disappointment

  • Commitment

While Amalickiah was willing to pursue his personal goals regardless of the cost and regardless of what was good, Moroni was equally committed to pursuing the things that would benefit his people in the cause of righteousness. Moroni’s commitment and achievements were such that I suspect that if we knew what to listen for we…

  • Persistence

Amalickiah could never be failed for running short on effort or on failing to relentlessly pursue his goals. In that way he was much like Moroni. The difference was that Amalickiah only cares about his own advancement and not about what was good for others.

  • Moroni and Amalickiah

Amalickiah was more forward and demanding than Moroni but Moroni was more popular and trusted. Moroni knew that it was important to vigorously oppose Amalickiah early and get the people to show where they stood before Amalickiah could convince anyone that his was the more widespread position.
