  • Laboring to destroy liberty

When the people are simply wicked the Lord will call them to repentance and those who have ears to hear will hear. When their wickedness extends to actively seeking to usurp the liberty of others his warning is more insistent and includes penalties to interrupt their malignant efforts

  • Joy without washing through sorrow

The righteous receive the invitation to repent and be better more readily than those who wish to appear righteous.

  • Establishing order

It seems fairly consistent that when a major call to repentance is given in the church (initial organization, joining with the people of Mosiah, Alma stepping down from the judgement seat) it is followed by the setting apart of leaders and teachers to maintain the order. That reminds me of all the elders quorum po…

  • Stewardship

I always think of Alma preaching to the unbelievers but it is clear here that he is preaching to the people of the church. As I think about it I realize that our best work is when we focus our efforts within the scope of our stewardship. Alma preaching to the people of the check…

  • The iniquity of the church

I always thought it was iniquity among the Nephites that brought Alma to dedicate himself to pacing and give up the judgement seat. • Seeking a king

By the time a large group of people seek to make someone a king the nation is already in trouble because win or lose at the ballot box the would be king will sell power and influence however possible. Amlici chose the sword. If he had lost I expected that Trump would either contest the…

  • Many were proud

This description of many proud people, some of whom had their names blotted out and others of whom withdrew from the church sounds like our day. It reminds me of Kate Kelly, John Dehlin, and those like James Carroll who preferred to follow them out of the church rather than humble themselves.

  • Lamoni’s mother

The mother of Lamoni (or at least the queen to his father, whether she was his mother or not) was not so soft of heart as his father or his wife. Her initial reaction was one of anger rather than faith. No matter, she was converted after Aaron raised her husband before her eyes.

  • Lamoni’s Father

It seems as I read this that the father of Lamoni was soft of heart and ready to learn what Ammon and Aaron were teaching among his people and the people of his son.
