The Nephites were not the church
Too often we seem to assume that the church or the believers were synonymous with the Nephites. It seems clear to me that Zoram, the leader of their armies at this time, was not a part of the church although he was a good person—willing to go to Alma when he heard that Alma might…

Commanded to leave
The record says that Alma and Amulek were commanded to leave Ammonihah after their prison was leveled around them and I wonder if that was commanded by the Spirit to leave the land, their work there being completed, or if it was commanded by the people to leave (which I’m sure the Spirit would have…

Informed by experience
I never thought before about how Aaron’s experience of being imprisoned had taught him to be mindful of how a riled up group of Lamanites would act. Knowing that he was quick to raise the king when people started to gather at the request of the queen.

A promising start
While the servants of Lamoni felt like victims when their flocks were scattered, Ammon saw opportunity to show them a different way to respond. After three days he saw something he could work with rather than a challenge to be overcome.

Anti-Repentant
The people of Ammonihah had not been inclined to kill believers before Alma and Amulek taught but they were so hardened that afterward they wanted to throw it in the faces of Alma and Amulek “you can’t make us do anything.” This, sadly, sounds like several of my kids. I never thought I’d the timing…

A consistent pattern
Alma taught about the high priesthood and about Melchizedek to show the people of Ammonihah that people being called to repentance and establishing peace in the land was an established gospel pattern that was why he used that as preface to him inviting them to repent as the people under Melchizedek has done after he…

Confirming the words of Amulek
The fact that Alma repeats the message of Amulek about facing judgement after being resurrected confirms to me that this was the message which pricked the heart of Zeezrom. I love how Alma concludes by inviting Zeezrom to enter into the rest of God.

Zeezrom the Nihilist
I have the feeling that Zeezrom had adopted a nihilistic attitude that nothing he did mattered. “Every man prospereth according to his genius” and the worst case scenario if there were eternal laws that a person broke was that they would cease to exist after this life (or something along those lines). I have the…

A modern Amulek
As I read this initial exchange between Amulek and the lawyers it reminds me of the war of words between Liz Cheney and the GOP. Liz tells the plain truth and they twist her words and call her a traitor but like Amulek she stood and boldly called out their lies.

Many modern Zeezrom’s
Zeezrom was struck with the realization of just how much his words had influenced the people for evil. He had said those words in the short-sighted effort to gain power, money, and influence while imagining that the actual truth was a trivial thing. I have seen so many basically decent people who should know better…
