“Be of good cheer”
The counsel to be of good cheer isn’t generic, it is always offered in conjunction with something encouraging. The Lord doesn’t offer this as an empty platitude but as a reminder that the things discouraging us do not constitute the whole picture. (Also, depression is discouraging but it is not the same as simply being…

Journal 8 November 2011
I have wondered what to make of my time as Elder’s Quorum President. Recently I began to see a representation of what was happening in the form of a car analogy. It seems that I was given an old 2001 Ford Focus to drive around—a perfectly functional car but not a highly tuned machine. Unfortunately…

Journal 23 October 2011
Sometime I will have to write out all my thoughts about our Elder’s Quorum Lesson today. For now, suffice it to say that President Eyring came to teach us as I had arranged before being released. He did not talk about the Law of Increasing Returns as I had requested but chose instead to answer…

Today was our first “normal” Sunday (meaning new normal) since I was set apart. We are still working on the timing of getting everyone to church, but we’ll get there. Abby Moore spoke in Sacrament meeting – another good talk from a past Sunday School student. Spencer Nelson taught Gospel Doctrine – last week I…

I had a good talk with Bishop today where I gave him a list of eight names I was considering. During our talk he nixed one name (because that particular brother is especially engaged in his current calling – this was not unexpected for me). Also as we talked I felt confident about the best…
