  • Seek counsel from His hand

I don’t belove that the brother of Jared failed to say any prayers in for years. More likely I suspect that his prayers were basic – perhaps thanks for blessings but not seeking to understand the will of the Lord our to learn new things in prayer. When he was charged I’m sure his prayer…

  • Turning to the Lord

When faced with the prospect of losing their language and being separated from those they knew, Jared and his brother turned first to the Lord to seek help and protection. This tells us about their mindset. It also tells us that the confounding if the languages was prophesied in advance at the tower of Babel.

  • A vision for Moroni

Moroni must have been given a vision of at least the final days of the Jaredites because after the destruction that changed the face of the land at the death of Christ no description could have been sufficiently accurate to guarantee that Moroni could know that the hill Ramah was the same hill where Mormon…

  • Final chances

The final chance that the Lord gave Coriantumr was later than I imagine I would have given him. That being said, I half suspect that the Lord would again have kept his promise if Coriantumr had followed through with his offer to give the kingdom to Shiz in order to end the war. The Lord…

  • Never hopeless

Before the people were finally destroyed they had sustained wickedness for several generations. The Lord sent prophets among them multiple times before the were finally destroyed.

  • Degrading cycle

It seems that over time the cycle of righteousness and wickedness slowly skews so that the people of righteousness become shorter while the people of wickedness become longer on average.

  • Eating their own

When people turn to wickedness they are no longer safe even from those who have joined them. Akish killed Jared and later fought his own sons.

  • Eyes open

One of the start lessons I learned in my mission was about the nature of secret combinations. They aren’t always about murder and power but they are always about subverting righteousness. There is no such thing as a secret combination of 1 (sold their soul to the devil) – it always features conscious collusion. That…

  • An unstable pattern

Ether chapter 6 encapsulates the unstable pattern of the Jaredites. Starting with a righteous long, someone (usually a son of the king) rebels and promotes wickedness and a divided kingdom (or takes over the whole kingdom) until someone else restores the kingdom to the rightful king or begins to reign in righteousness. This pattern repeats…
