The murder of Seezoram
I hadn’t noticed before that Nephi told the people gathered outside his garden that the chief judge was murdered by his own brother. That makes it all the more disingenuous that the judges would accuse Nephi and ask him who committed the murder. He had told them but they hood he would implicate himself so…

Reversing first and last
I can totally see a day coming when faithful saints on the western hemisphere where the gospel seems to have reached its peak already find little success among those of their own nations who aren’t already faithful in the gospel but will find their joy in the conversions of many among nations where Christianity has…

Wearied by wickedness
Nephi forsook the judgment seat because he was waited by the wickedness of the people. I wonder if we would ever see someone forsake public office (whether as a judge or some other position) because they were wearied by the wickedness within the system. Of course it seems that the Nephites were more wicked in…

A Secret Combination
The supporters of Paanchi must have been smart enough to recognize that even with Pahoran dead the Nephites wouldn’t be likely to choose Paanchi add their chief judge. Having been convicted they would almost certainly have chosen Pacumeni first. They must have anticipated that they would need to murder at least one more chef judge…

Samuel the Lamanite
We really only have one episode from the life of Samuel but he taught boldly to a highly antagonistic audience and field the coming of the Savior – including His eventual death and resurrection. I wonder if Samuel was asking those converted by Nephi and Lehi. Perhaps he came to Zerahemla to see Nephi.

Nephi and Lehi
The lives of Lehi and Nephi weren’t identical. Nephi was the chief judge for a period of time, he had charge of the sacred records, and if there was a single had of the church at that time it would be Nephi (we don’t actually know if Nephi was actually considered ahead of all others…

Helaman II
Helaman the some of Helaman is the righteous son of a famous righteous man. Sometimes we expect that to naturally be the case but the sons of Pahoran who were his contemporaries prove otherwise. Their father was also a famous righteous man but one of them tried to overthrow the governance his father had lead…

Helaman 15 – 16 Watching the people continue to languish in iniquity must have been a heavy burden for Nephi. He must have said in his heart “why will ye not hearken to the truth and be gathered into the arms of the love of Heavenly Father.” I finally understand why the unbelievers would think…

Helaman 14 I wonder what the earth looked like at the time of Christ. The statement by Samuel that the earth would be broken up by the violence of the quaking at His death suggests the possibility that continental drift wasn’t a reality prior to that time. That idea would shake our assumptions in geology.

Helaman 13 I didn’t realize that Samuel preached many days in Zerahemla before they kicked him out. I had assumed that their initial rejection was immediate. I don’t think I ever connected the fact that Mormon spoke of what happens when the Lord curses riches immediately before he wrote the story of Samuel. He was…
