Peace and prosperity are possible
These chapters illustrate that peace and prosperity can exist and even be sustained at the same time as there is growing wickedness. Broken but functioning
It seems that the Nephites never fully recovered from the schism of the king-men until the coming of Christ. Moroni put down the king-men but they still had contentions about who should lead such that the robbers of Gadianton were formed. Lasting change
Nephi felt that the people had sincerely changed during the famine but that change was short-lived. What is it that makes sustainable, durable change in people (individually and as a society)? Punishments and threats clearly are ineffective for long-term change.

Another mission
Just when Nephi thought his work was done (at least temporarily) and when he was not asking for anything from the Lord he was given a gift if great power and a charge to go among the people again.
