Jacob 4For some reason I had always seen this as Jacob speaking to the people as the he was in the two previous chapters. Here he is speaking to the future generations (us) and it is to us that he gives this counsel and Zenos’ parable of the olive tree.

Jacob 3Apparently Lehi had been explicitly told that the people should not practice polygamy. Also, I love how Jacob sets the Lamanites up as an example to the Nephites. “Remember that you may, through your iniquities, bring your children to destruction and have their sins answered upon your heads.”

Jacob 2It’s hard to believe that this is being spoken to people not two generations removed from knowing Lehi. Lehi died perhaps 45 years before Jacob spoke these words.

Jacob 1I note that the Nephites and the Lamanites were not defined according to righteousness. Jacob defines them according to a particular line of kings (the line that followed Nephi). Jacob 1 – 2I wonder how soon after Nephi’s death Jacob had to give this sermon. I also realize some interesting implications of the “after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good – to clothe the…

Jacob 5:23-33I realized for the first time today that the reason the tree in the best spot of ground yielded good fruit on only half the tree was because the original tree was only half good. Somehow I had believed that it was because the ground was too good and lacked opposition. The reality is…

Jacob 7I wonder what makes a person work so diligently to destroy the doctrine of Christ? I also realize that Sherem probably used the very same logic and the very same challenge with other strong believers in Christ – “I would not deny Him if He existed, show me a sign!” Previously the strong probably…
