Sorrow for the wickedness
Mormon wanted to save the readers from the sorrow if knowing how depraved his people were even though he knew that their wickedness could not be hidden. Moroni helps us get a glimpse of what Mormon want writing. Truly it does cause the righteous to mourn for their wickedness.

Only two leaders
Mormon was among 24 people out of 230,000 who survived but of the 23 leaders of ten thousand each only he and Moroni survived that day.
