Driven to madness
The goal of Satan is to drive those who follow him to the point that they will act like animals without any moral principle. The closer he can bring them to that point the more satisfied he will be (and the less rational they will be).

History broken
Many times the Nephites have faced destruction and then repented to be preserved. This time when the Lord gave them a respite they didn’t repent even after ten years. It is no wonder that they were finally destroyed.

Miracles
I realize now why the Nephites always thought that Mormon could save them because he was leading them when they defeated a Lamanites army that was virtually twice the size of their army.

Expectations
The fact that Ammaron told Mormon to only take the plates of Nephi suggests to me that he wasn’t expecting Mormon to be the last real historian for the Nephites, just that he would be the next historian. If he has expected that Mormon would be the last he probably would have instructed him to…

Final invitation
After seeing his people wiped out, Mormon writes with the eye of faith to the descendants of those who have escaped or joined their enemies inviting them to yet repent and come unto Christ.

Unstated motivations
I suspect that Mormon asked for the time to gather his people both to gain maximum strength but also to select a strategic location and though many might have been unaware he might have also been hoping against hope that they might repent and regain some standing before the Lord. On the other hand, the…

For God’s purpose
Mormon made sure to record the awful scenes from his lifetime simply because doing so was part of fulfilling the covenant that the Lord made with His people. As awful as those things were and how sad he was to observe it, he would not let these terrible experiences be for naught.
